The $25 Dresser Flip That Took One Weekend
Most secondhand furniture is not worth flipping. The trick is knowing in the first thirty seconds which pieces are, and walking away from the rest.

What makes a piece worth buying
- Solid wood or solid wood veneer, not particleboard. Lift one end — particleboard is unmistakably lighter, and it swells permanently once damp.
- Drawers that run on wooden runners or metal slides. Both are fixable. Drawers that sit directly on a rail cut into chipboard are not.
- A square carcass. Push a top corner gently. Movement means loose joints, which is a repair, not a paint job.
- Ugly, not broken. Bad colour, bad handles and scratched varnish are all cosmetic. Water damage, woodworm and missing structural parts are not.
Walk away from: anything with a musty smell that does not clear after a day outdoors, any veneer that is lifting across a large area, and anything where the drawer bottoms are sagging out of their grooves.
The ten-minute drawer fix
Sticking wooden drawers are almost always friction, not damage. Pull the drawer out, rub a candle or a bar of soap along the wooden runners and the bottom edges of the drawer sides, then slide it back. It is the oldest fix in furniture and it works immediately.
Prep, then paint
- Remove handles and drawers. Number the drawers with tape so they go back in the same order — they wear into their own slots.
- Clean with sugar soap. Old furniture polish sits on the surface and stops paint gripping.
- Sand lightly with 180 grit, just enough to dull the shine.
- One coat of bonding primer, especially over dark wood, which otherwise bleeds through pale paint for years.
- Two thin coats of furniture paint, sanding lightly between them with 240 grit.
Handles change more than paint does
New handles are the cheapest and most visible upgrade on any flipped piece. Measure the centre-to-centre distance of the existing screw holes before shopping — matching that spacing means no drilling, no filling, and no new holes to line up.
