The Rental Wall Makeover That Peels Off in One Afternoon
Sixty-eight dollars, one weekend, and not a single hole in the plaster. Here is the whole thing — including the test we ran first, because peelable paint is not safe on every wall.

Why an arch, and why peelable paint
Renting means the interesting walls are off limits. No wallpaper, no drilling, nothing that needs a professional to undo. An arch of colour gets around all of it: depending on what you stand in front of it, it reads as a headboard, a nook, or a frame — and it needs no fixings at all.
Peelable paint is the part people get wrong. It behaves like ordinary emulsion while you work, then lifts away as one continuous film when you are done. That only works if the layer underneath is sound. On a wall that is already flaking, the film takes the old paint with it, and you have made the problem worse instead of better.
Test first, always. Paint a 10 cm square in a corner, leave it 48 hours, then peel it. If it lifts cleanly, carry on. If it pulls colour off the wall, stop — and do the thrifted gallery wall instead, which gets a similar effect from three small nails.

The five steps
1. Test the wall
Covered above, and worth the two-day wait. Everything below assumes your test square came off clean.
2. Draw the arch
Forget freehand. Push a drawing pin into the centre of where the arch will sit, tie a pencil to a length of string, pull it taut and swing an arc. The string length is half your arch width. Ours was 110 cm wide, so the string ran 55 cm from pin to pencil tip.
Mark the two vertical sides with a spirit level before you swing the curve. Skip that and the arch leans — and you will not notice until the paint is already on.
3. Mask the curve
Tape does not bend. Cut it into 8 cm pieces and lay them along the pencil line at slight angles, overlapping each one. The curve comes from many short straight pieces, not from stretching the tape. Stretched tape relaxes as it dries and lets paint bleed underneath.
4. Two thin coats, not one thick one
Peelable paint is thicker than emulsion and tempting to lay on heavily. Do not. A thick coat dries unevenly and tears when you remove it. Two thin coats, two hours apart, give a flatter finish and a film that lifts in one piece.
5. Pull the tape while it is tacky
Let the paint dry completely and the tape takes the edge with it. Pull it while the second coat is still slightly tacky, at a shallow angle away from the paint, and the line stays sharp.
Taking it off again
Two hours, at the end of the tenancy. Score along one edge with a fingernail, lift a corner, then pull slowly at a shallow angle. Pull straight out from the wall and the film tears; pull sideways along the surface and it comes away in sheets you can fold into a bin bag.
Ours left the wall exactly as we found it. The deposit came back in full, which is the only review of this project that really counts.

Questions people asked
Will peelable paint damage my landlord’s wall?
Not if the wall underneath is sound emulsion in good condition. Test a small taped patch first. On flaking or distempered walls the film can lift the old layer with it, so skip the project on those surfaces.
How much does a rental arch wall cost?
Ours came to $68 including a litre of peelable paint, low-tack tape, a roller set and a spare tape roll. Reusing a roller you already own brings it closer to $50.
How long does it take to remove?
About two hours for a single wall. Score the edge, lift one corner, and pull slowly at a shallow angle so the film comes away in large pieces rather than shreds.
Can I do this over wallpaper?
No. The film bonds to the wallpaper and lifts it at the seams. Painted plaster or plasterboard only.
