Three Lamps Beat One Ceiling Light, Every Time
One bulb in the middle of the ceiling is the most common decorating mistake there is, and it is also the cheapest one to fix.

What a single overhead light actually does
It lights the floor. Everything above knee height — the sofa back, the artwork, people’s faces — falls into flat shadow, and the corners of the room go dark. Dark corners make a room read as smaller than it is, which is the exact opposite of what a central light is supposed to achieve.
Photographers have known this forever, which is why nobody lights a portrait from directly overhead.
The three-point setup
- A floor lamp in the darkest corner. This is the one that changes the room. Lighting the corner pushes the wall visually backwards.
- A table lamp at seated eye level, roughly 100–110 cm from the floor, next to wherever people actually sit.
- A low light — a small lamp on a shelf, or a plug-in wall light behind a plant. This is the one that creates shadow and depth rather than removing it.
Turn the ceiling light off entirely once the three are in place. If the room feels too dark, the problem is bulb brightness, not lamp count.
Bulb temperature matters more than the lamp
Buy 2700K bulbs. Anything above 3000K reads as office lighting, and it will make a warm room look clinical no matter how good the furniture is. Every bulb in the room should be the same temperature — mixing them is why some rooms feel subtly wrong without anyone being able to say why.
The cheapest upgrade in decorating. Replacing mismatched bulbs with a matched set of 2700K bulbs costs about $15 and changes a room more than most furniture purchases do.
