Six Layout Mistakes That Make a Small Living Room Smaller
Every fix in this list costs nothing. They are all about where things go — which is the part of decorating that people skip straight past on the way to buying something.

1. Everything pushed against the walls
The instinct in a small room is to clear the middle. It backfires: a ring of furniture around an empty centre makes the room read as a corridor. Pull the sofa 10 cm off the wall. That small gap reads as deliberate spacing rather than as a shortage of room.
2. A rug that is too small
A rug floating in the middle with all the furniture off it draws a small box on your floor, and the room shrinks to the size of that box. At minimum, the front legs of every seat should sit on the rug. If the budget only stretches to a small rug, no rug is the better choice.
3. No planned path through the room
Walk from the door to the window. Whatever you had to step around is in the wrong place. A clear 60 cm route through a room makes it feel larger than any furniture arrangement does, because you experience the space by moving through it.
4. Curtains hung at window height
Hang the rail 15 cm below the ceiling rather than just above the window frame, and extend it 20 cm past the frame on each side. The window looks taller and wider, and more daylight gets in because the open curtains no longer cover the glass.
Free, and the single most effective one. Of everything on this list, moving the curtain rail up changes a room the most for the least money.
5. Too many small things
Five small objects on a shelf read as clutter. Two larger objects read as decoration. In a small room, fewer and bigger is consistently the right call — the eye counts objects, and a high count says busy, which the brain reads as cramped.
6. A dark corner left dark
Covered in more detail in the lighting post, but it belongs on this list. A lit corner pushes the wall visually backwards. An unlit one pulls it in.

Should furniture touch the walls in a small room?
No. A 10 cm gap makes the placement look intentional and the room look larger. Pushing everything flat against the wall has the opposite effect to the one intended.
